The Arts Department’s production for 2011 was ‘King Raam’ involving well over 100 students and a combined audience of over 1000 to the three scheduled shows. Drama, Harmony H.Q., Cheerleading, Academy Dance, Pacifica, Kapahaka, H.I.S. Sound System, Girls’ Hip Hop, Boys’ Hip Hop, Highland Dance, Orchestra and Ukulele Orchestra performed an entertaining show to sell out audiences. King Raam searched the world for stories of love, courage, strength and kindness with which to strengthen the spirit of mankind,  finding these stories in England, Scotland, Mexico, the U.S.A, Rarotonga and of course, in New Zealand. There was much entertainment and laughter along the way as well as a wonderful learning opportunity for students involved in the Performing Arts.

On Tuesday 4 October Hastings Intermediate School held our annual Kapa Haka Festival.

The performances, the cheers of support, the atmosphere…what an AWESOME day!

Our festival was a great success and what a fantastic arena to share, encourage and support each other at all levels of learning and performance. 

It was clear to see that all participants, both teachers and students, had worked extremely hard to attain the high level of performance that was enjoyed and appreciated by everyone in attendance.

Hastings Intermediate School sports representatives departed for Tauranga to attend the NZ AIMS sporting tournament (NZ Association of Intermediates and Middle Schools) on Sunday 28th August 2011.  We took competitors in swimming, basketball and netball - the largest team that Hastings has ever sent to AIMS with 42 students, 3 teachers and many helpful parents. The competition was tough but we still managed to come away with our heads held high as the netball team finished 11th out of 56 teams (our best result to date), the swimmers won medals in Freestyle, Butterfly and Medley events (this is the first time we have entered swimmers), both the boys and girls basketball teams finished 9th out of 20 teams and Amariah Luki took home a medal for being named in the basketball tournament team, which recognises the best individual players in the competition. The swimmers wound up their competition and returned home Wednesday 31 August while the basketballers and netballers returned home Friday 2 September after their final games.  The preparation and organisation of this trip was a huge success and students, teachers and parents all had a great week away.

Miss Skelton has been working hard this term with Boys’ and Girls’ Hip Hop, Cheerleading and Dance Academy teams to create a piece for Stage Challenge entitled ‘The Seasonal Cycle’. We were the only Intermediate team to enter Stage Challenge which is the competitive section of this National and International performing arts event. The hard work paid off when we were awarded excellence for choreography and the School Initiative Award which recognises the extra hours put in by staff, parents and a hundred talented students to make the performance happen. This has been an amazing learning experience for the students involved, not only about storytelling through dance but about choreography, performance, sound and lighting and professional theatre behaviour.

Three teams from Hastings Intermediate entered the Hawke’s Bay Gymnastic Association Dance Festival held in our Hall on Tuesday 17th May. A total of twenty teams from Intermediate schools around Hawke’s Bay competed. Students spent weeks choreographing, rehearsing and organising costumes in order to be well prepared for the big day. We are proud to announce that all three teams received excellent feedback from the judges, one team was awarded Highly Commended and one team won First Prize! Congratulations to all students who took part – the standard was particularly high this year.

Eleven of our students got creative and took part in the 2011 Edible Arts Competition that was held at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House last weekend. Between them they created five incredible outfits made out of all sorts of goodies! From poppadom ears and coconut hooves, to dyed tea bags, toast, plastic shopping bags, dehydrated fruit and lollies, they paraded quite a feast for the eye!  All of the girls involved demonstrated amazing commitment, staying afterschool for making workshops and spending hours at home stitching and gluing. They all did extremely well and have innovative, quirky garments to show for it!

We were fortunate to have New Zealand Playhouse visit us on 7th April with their touring show ‘Shakespeare As You Write It’. An audience comprised of 210 students chose the movie ‘Boy’ and Britain in the Middle Ages as the setting and inspiration for an improvised new play. Boyio and Rockio then bravely battled their way through various incidents to win the love of the beautiful Chardonnay (with an intriguing beard) and free their goat, Leaf, from the clutches of the loathsome Bullio. The show was engaging; full of laughs and learning about rhyming couplets, similes and the quick wittedness of improvised theatre.
