Leadership Academy
Only year eight students are eligible to gain entry into the leadership academy as it is a privileged position of responsibility and profile reserved for our senior students. The academy attracts applicants from 90% of our year eight cohort. Although the academy members briefly meet every day most of their workshops are held out of school time, before school and after school.
There are several overnight sleepovers and workshops held each term where students are extended in: Te Reo, speech, vocal performance, etiquette, time management and habits of success.
The academy programme focuses on providing opportunities to meet inspiring people who are leaders in our community, in education, politics and business They academy hold workshops on habits of success with the following leaders:
• Professor Sir Mason Durie Deputy Vice Chancellor Massey University
• Professor Roger Boshier Head of Education British Columbia University
• Phillip Rhodes International Opera singer
• Henare O’Keefe Flaxmere councillor, local hero, QSM
• Craig Foss Local M.P. and cabinet minister
• Tariana Turia Leader of the Maori Political party
• Judge Boshier Principal family court judge and QC
• Lawrence Yule Hastings Mayor
• Roger Hall New Zealand playwright
• Jacoby Poulain Flaxmere Councillor – solicitor
The leadership academy are financially supported by the Principals of H.B.H.S., H.G.H.S. and Karamu school as well as a number of local and national business.
Highlights for the academy are:
• Wellington E.O.T.C. for five days and workshops with Judge Boshier, Craig Foss and Minister Turia. Attending a Hurricanes Rugby game in Wellington
• Hosting the Karamu Rotary group for dinner
• Dinner workshops with Henare O’Keefe and Jacoby Poulain
• Eight day excursion to Wayalailai Island – Fiji.
• Multiple sleepovers and workshops on Te Reo, Kapahaka, speech delivery, vocal performance.
• End of year sponsors dinner for up to 150 guests with a number of the leaders listed above attending as key speakers for the night.
• E.O.T.C. to Massey University and being hosted by Professor Sir Mason Durie at the campus Marae and visiting the university campus, lectures and Te Toa college.
